We think it will pay off, but is quite risky. But we are confident in our navigator. We see out the cabin as Dee comes out and relays the sched. Dee explains: We were the fastest boat in the sched. We've got more breeze, which is why we positioned ourselves furthest east. Just need to keep it up and stay focused. Annalise: A lot of upwind, which is slow. Today for example is a bad day; we just lost 4 miles to Dongfeng in a couple of hours, and we don't really have the answers to it. So frustration goes up, people get frustrated, tired, they're exhausted already, and you've gotta be able to deal with that. And that just comes down to good leadership, good management of the team, and everyone getting back into their positing and their roles, and just doing their job, and not trying to get into each other and getting emotional about it... keep the ups and downs away... "You can never regret putting in 100%, and that's what we're doing right now."Dee, on deck, talks about how she went to a dark place (due to their being left behind by 4 other boats, I assume), but she didn't show it outwardly. "If I came up on deck swearing and miserable and head down, then everyone would go down rapidly. So I went to my bunk for a little while... You have to look at, what can you do? If you're just miseralbe about it it doesn't help you go aster. We've got 90 miles to find; that's one bad cloud for them, one good cloud for us, and we've got 2,900 miles to go. There's a lot of sailing left... We thought we'd be fighting at the front, and now we're fighting at hte back." Bernardo talks about trying to improve all the time, working with the team. He talks about Ben, who went in 3 years' time from asking for a job sweeping out the boatyard to racing in this event. "That's just great to see." And for me, he was a rugby player... Nine out of ten guys I've ever played rugby with always put the team first." Witty talks about how the sailing is as grueling on the body as he thought it was. Guys have been sailing pretty hard all night. Everyone's been up pretty much most of the night. Gybed on a couple of shifts. Got a nice header for a while..." Nicho, at the helm: "Learned the same lessons I think I've been taught before: never to be complacent. I don't think we were complacent, but we had one terrible gybe which I'm more responsible for than anyone, and that cost us the leg. And the usual story, that you make that mistake in the middle of nowhere, and you can pay for it for a long time. So that's what we did this leg." Martine, on deck: "What I've learned on this spedific leg? Probably a lot of patience. And try to find joy, and happiness, in little things every day... Sometimes a bird, or whale-watching, has made my day, a funny joke; anything. Always try to find the thing that makes you happy." Brad sleeping on the foredeck in bare feet. Nicolai, below: "I think this leg's been quite a challenge for many of us. Not so much a normal Volvo leg, physically a challenge, but more mentally and team-wise, it's been a tough one. But it's also been one that we probably needed to have to keep getting better and better, and hopefully learn from it, all of us, and become a stronger team. And I think we are handling quite well the headwinds we have, no issues within the team, it's all head down and keep working whatever we find ourself in and that's quite positive and quite good." "It's awesome, we've got a good lead on the whole fleet now, shows we're a pretty strong team. Especially in all conditions." Talks about how the leg was physically hard, pushing to their limits. Shows they're a solid team, strong, never going to give up. "I was just chatting wiht Louis now on the bow, and if we can handle that kind of situation we can pretty much handle anything out there. So anything after this is going to seem easier." Talks about how it's just a pitstop in Melbourne, they have a few more days than some other teams. Boat's in good shape; could go sailing tomorrow.
